POP 2010

Yesterday was yet another batch passing out of the unit, along with 2 CIs and the OC Unit. It was rather fun and emotional at the same time.

Can still remember the time when my batch passed out. Lousy venue, lousy organisation, lousy buffet, but at least it still managed to be held. It was memorable though. But I left with lots of regrets. The things which I had wanted to do but were limited due to my low capabilities and low position. Was not enthusiastic at all when I was a cadet. 咎由自取,能怪谁?Became a stand-in NCO via pure time devotion and often went thinking during ATRs. Mr. Ong was really a good OC Unit, his advice was invaluable, although very long. During my batch's POP, at the CIs and OC Unit propaganda and best wishes session, my mind was filled with these thoughts, especially since I received special mention from Mr. Ong during the ceremony. Then, Terence told me to come back as a CI during the shaking hands session. I wondered about it then. "Can I really be one, even without adequate experience?" Now as an inexperienced CI, I witnessed another batch passing out. I knew them for several months only. Was very carefree around them, unexpectedly. Just shot from my mouth what I wanted to say. Hence ended up being labelled as a joker. One said that being lame is equivalent to being funny by today's trend. Made several friends easily from having that character which I naturally take up when I cross JC to HS. Also don't know why the change takes place. I'm usually pretty mind-my-own-business in class and lectures. But then again, my class makes the most noise in lectures and probably tutorials too. Will miss them, developed a connection with some of the NCOs and ExCo / FIs members. But well, I can see them around in JC, just that in J2, I'll probably be more of a zombie than currently. The alumni that came back, officially organised by me via email, led me have a very good time yesterday. Had a better time than our own POP even. We owned an entire bus of 74 except a girl which kindly helped us take pictures, The time utilized at KAP was even better, reminiscence is the word. We caught up with each other on the happenings in our lives and gossiped about everything practically under the sun. IT WAS DAMN ENJOYABLE MAN. I want more times like that! XD The first batch of passed out cadets who came back as alumni =), a rather group too. We started the trend and may it be passed down. I think fate has been rather nice to me. Things have been rather smooth-sailing for me and mostly to my will. Have good colleagues who are willing to guide me along albeit being doubtful of my abilities. Now, after POP, I do have official positions and I'll do my best to guide the unit to greater heights. The feeling is different. Really.

And towards the end of the KAP journey, with that 无所不谈,completely open mindset with nothing to hide, I was struck with a stark realization. Didn't really care during that time, didn't think much. But I knew what that signified. I already kind of showed my relation to him that some alumni were asking about the actions I did. That alter ego open attitude of mind heck cares about most things and can attract many people as friends. And I can talk a lot with that form. That's good for making friends, but not really good for forging close relations. That alter form of mine tells me to not care about minor details. However, that normal form of mine, which takes in everything (makes it easy to fulfill my responsibility in the CCA), registers in me a message I can't possibly ignore. Friendship is maintained by constant sacrifices made for each other. But sacrifices come in many forms too. The convenience of sacrifice can be considered in evaluating the level of devotion one has for you. A sacrifice made that is convenient is inevitably different from one which is specially done out of the original course of action for someone. Obviously the latter signifies that the person treasures you a lot more. If the level of convenience of sacrifice is similar, then the friendship is a healthy one. If not, it is probably the case of one over-devoting and the other "exploiting". Unhealthy, the time and energy spent can be better spent on someone else who he is neglecting, whether or not he minds. The level of commitment theoretically should be the same for a healthy relationship. I know it. But, the sense of affection is too strong for certain people, the effects of withdrawal from them whenever I try to are varied but they are extremely sore and sour. As I have mentioned before, no siblings implies that the effect is multiplied by a number of times depending on which friend it is. I can't possibly tune down the level of sacrifice if I find indicators of over-commitment as the sense of bond is too strong (albeit it being stronger one way than another). I can only hope the relevant friends hike up their levels to match mine, but it is near impossible as it means diverting attention from elsewhere. Therefore, NO SOLUTION, and it will most probably be status quo. And I remember in chemistry, my tutor loves to say "The rich always donate to the poor, unlike the real world, where the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer." Indeed, why is life so difficult and humans so complex?

Irate

A lecture test per week has its merits and demerits. Merit: Students have the luxury of the entire week to study. Doesn't apply to me though. I usually study the day before the test only, so this benefit is voided for me. Demerit: Drags the entire period of tests. In high school, everything is crammed in around 2 weeks. A whole lot of mugging, and the thunderstorm will be gone. Taking tests is like being a soldier in enemy camp getting back to base camp. To do so, he has to go through the no-man-land filled with underground land mines which he has to avoid (obviously). The land mines are the tests that students have to take and they are set every year by teachers. The base camp is the end of the academic year while school holidays are well... rest points. I prefer the tests to be crammed into 2 weeks or less, so that everything will be over and done with ASAP and I can slack. =/

Here I am whining again. During half of the lectures I sit with my good friends from other classes as a habit, the other half I sit with my class (or sleep). I'll still prefer a best friend and not care much about other people. Life will be much easier that way. I will not need to care about details to maintain a ring of close friends to try to fill the void of my heart where a best friend should feel. Doesn't even come close... But I have to make do. It's what I have, so might as well treasure it.

I do not like several kinds of people. The list is probably inexhaustible but I'll just record for fun.

1) 马后炮 people. Things happened already and then they say a whole lot of nonconstructive bullshit. Doesn't include critiques,
2) 虚情假意 people. Not actually feel/think one way but act so to achieve some aims. 终究狐狸尾巴是会露出来的,省点吧。
3) 自编自导自演 people. Advancement of the 2nd type of people. They actually plan properly to get to their target, fooling people along the way and navigating things... if they succeed that is. They're the main character in their show, the others are their pawns.
4) 没情没义 people. No morales, no feelings. They do what they like. Emotions don't work on them.
5) 自扫门前雪 people. Selfish people. Care for themselves only.
6) 隔岸观火 people. Look on. Something funny happens they laugh. The end.
7) 加油加醋 people. Even more epic. They fuel conflicts and generally make bad stuff worse.
8) 没关系/不要紧 people. Seems normal. But they are irritating at times, especially when one searches for comfort  from them and they seem nonchalant or even pokes fun at the matter at hand.
9) 随便 people. Anyhow also can. Got problem? 船到桥头自然直。No need worry man.
10) 什么? people. Make promises and break them intentionally or unintentionally but do not think they are wrong. Fine. Oblivion is bliss.

I think I belong a little to the categories above. That's why I irritate myself at times and get pissed off for no good reason. Oh well. Can't help it. Adapt and survive. That's right. Just hope I don't get owned too much in the process...

Tired

Never have I felt this level of fatigue before. My muscles refuses to budge long distances, my brain refuses to think straight. I just feel defeated. Don't feel like doing anything. Not because of the long distance I walked from High school gate to Princess of Wales Road (via the front) to Sixth Avenue (via the back) before walking into the Namly roads. That is nothing actually. It's something else.

Area 15 ATC 2010 improved my communication and leadership skills tremendously. I am now able to speak up easily, think on the spot and exude some confidence. Growth is indeed never ending, even when I am now a P/CI. Gained a lot of experience which will make me a better CI. Meanwhile, the process of learning shall continue. I still have a lot to learn.

Thinking back, I wondered why I never heeded my friend's advice. Widen the social circle by joining a fresh CCA with a large membership. Interact with more people, especially girls. He said it will help in the future. After I expressed that I have some several good relations with juniors, I could sense that he was somewhat skeptical about the eventual outcomes. Just around a month ago, I told him that I joined back my previous CCA. He was rather bemused and surprised. I can understand his rationale for his response now. Interaction with girls will bring experience in dealing with women in the future. Interaction with juniors brings... He thinks it will be fruitless and that interacting with same age (i.e. level) people will be more useful and yield better results. I respected his opinion during that time, but could not grasp his rationale. I think I can now.

It all started out with me having no siblings. Thus, I yearn for close friends and very^very much want a best friend to understand and be there for me. Up till now, as I have stated before, my ultimate goal is still not achieved or at best it is ambiguous. But I shall not lie to myself. Reality is there in the face. Don't have means don't have. No use building castles in the air and imagining hypothetical scenarios. Lower sec gained a close friend, upper sec another, and now JC yet another. All are the same age. Yet the relationships cannot go any further as I changed classes in these years and they gained closer friends (frequently their best). Not as if I do not put in the effort to maintain and build. The limitation of a severe lack of physical interaction is a factor which I realized matters a lot. And I hate it. No amount of virtual communication will replace it. Period. I have used time to increase my brain capacity in primary school and lower sec. Yes, my results are above average. People are envious. But what for? I have no one to share it with apart from my parents. I will rather get Es and have BFFs to share the joys and woes.

And I wonder if I am trying hard enough. Seriously. Or maybe I'm just not fated to have the luxury.

Next factor. I have to search high and low for what everyone easily gets. A best friend. In the process, I have learnt a lot about human relations and psychology. Matured a lot. But what for? I rather get a best friend and live in oblivion. The pain, the loneliness, the disappointment. To hell with these feelings. As time passes and the search goes on, I learnt to hide my emotions. Statue? A disinterested face? These are just masks that I find increasingly useful. 1) It hides emotions from curious eyes. 2) I can think more clearly and logically rather than let emotions overrun me. 3) I will look like I don't care (when I actually do). 4) Curious eyes will be convinced that I am fine. As encounters and "failures" in my quest increase, I can put on an act in front of people better. A best friend can always spot the pain in the eyes when others see nothing or a fake smile put on. That is an indicator. But well, this has not happened.

Humans are like any other animals. 适者生存,宁教我负天下人,休教天下人负我。I am grateful for my upbringing of morals that effectively packs the above expressions into a far corner of my brain. However, this is needed to fight for what one wants, and since my instinct is locked away, I end up taking things as they go. Which is bad. I rather not have these morals. They impede in the expressing of feelings via actions physically as one, like a stupid me, ends up thinking for other people and make decisions to maximize their welfare instead. I realize I am increasingly that idiotic. Last time, I just feel indignant and do nothing. Now, I willingly give up, make others happy, and suffer silently instead. The negatives of Chinese morals. These morals will be really good if loyalty in all sense still exists like in ancient times. Sworn brothers, faithful 臣s which are willing to under any condition die for their 君主s etc. At least people do not see another friend and end up abandoning the first friend even if the second is closer. At least people reciprocate double of what their benefactors give. Cannot blame other people. Can only blame myself for being too much like a stone around friends of friends. Just want to see friends' reactions and often than not I end up getting ignored eventually. 习以为常了,反正是我自己自讨苦吃。I feel like screwing myself sometimes. Why care for others? A whole lot of bullshit.

Effect of physical interaction with one's own peers will always be much stronger. No matter how much one puts in to someone unrelated to him of a different age (applies to cases of schooling people), the relation will just reach an asymptote and not touch the "Best Friend" value. I just came to accept it. Been avoiding it for months. It's time to face it. The truth hurts every time. Time to listen to my friend. Another reason why trying to get a best friend from the same age is easier is because the level of maturity is around the same. (Level of maturity varies drastically with age especially for teenagers.)

I do not like to force people to make decisions, especially between friends. Therefore, backing out is a good option? Or is it... It bloody isn't. Unfortunately, my brain is programmed that way. To let friends have an easier time by not putting them in a spot. So that they do not need to choose. It is high time to be selfish. (And here I am increasingly lending my homework to others to refer to when previously I protect my precious work.) T_T How I wish I can take my brain out, reprogram it the way I want it to be and then put it back in.
